Experience Summary
As a participant in a bilingual tutoring project, I thrived in connecting with my students and tailoring the lesson plan to their specific needs. I accompanied my students in the classroom, translated assignments from English to Spanish, and provided instruction entirely in Spanish. As a tutor in this program, I received invaluable experience working with at-risk youth from the ages of 9 to 14. These students had varying language proficiencies, and I learned much from helping all of them. In addition to my tutoring experience, I have had at least five years of experience as a peer reviewer both in the classroom for English literature and as a professional editor. I have tutored students in math, ESL, and English literature and composition.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is based on the needs of each particular student, and, in cases where ability levels are varied, I find ways to use the strengths of each student to help the group as a whole. In my experience as a tutor, I have found that children often just need extra attention to thrive. Some of my most difficult cases, as a result, have become the most rewarding. My focus is on the natural abilities and creativity of each individual child and on fostering those abilities through well-organized and thoughtful instruction. The ability to learn and thrive is innate in everyone; it is the teacher's task to bring those qualities to the forefront.
