Experience Summary
I graduated from the University of Florida in 2006 with a BA in History. Earlier this year I completed my MA in American Studies at the University of South Florida. During my two years at USF, I engaged in extensive teaching and tutoring activities. During my first year I was a graduate teaching assistant. During my second year I taught my own classes. Being a part of the general education curriculum, these classes required an extensive amount of writing from the students. As such, I assisted many students in improving their grammatical skills, essay writing, and reading comprehension. My expertise in tutoring lies in these areas as well as history, social studies, and mathematics.
Teaching Style
Many times, students (and teachers!) rely too heavily on lazy workarounds and "cheats." I have found, however, that these techniques have only limited short-term benefits. Teaching is much more than rote memorization. To truly teach a student, we need to teach them how to think, not what to think. My teaching style centers on this belief as I focus on the student's approach of questions and the underlying reasoning for their answers rather than whether their answer was technically right or wrong. I relate well to students because I do not force them to adopt my way of thinking. Instead, I assist them in honing their own unique way of thinking to harness their full intellectual potential.
