Experience Summary
I realized my passion for teaching after working in a daycare for two years and organizing their preschool program. At, Carlow my teaching experiences were enhanced through my various field placements and student teaching. In October 2008, I began working as the third grade teaching assistant, at The Urban League of Pittsburgh Charter School. I taught Social Studies, Handwriting, worked in small groups and helped with after school tutoring. In February 2009, I became the primary reading coach at ULGPCS. In this position, I taught whole class lessons on reading comprehension techniques such as visualization, summarizing, and predicting. In addition to these responsibilities, I pulled out small groups of at risk, first and second grade students to improve reading fluency, decoding, and comprehension skills. Also, with the help of the Process Writing technique, I instructed writing to first grade.
Teaching Style
I believe that children learn best from hands on experiences. It is up to me, the teacher to create these experiences, guide the child, and provide lots of postive reinforcement. There are many ways to learn and it is up to the teacher to help the student find which ways they learn best. There is also many different areas of intelligence and every person has a strength in one or more of these areas. Expectations should always be made clear, as well as an opportunity for routine, but also allowing room for flexibility. The child always comes first.
