Experience Summary
As a caregiver for my two nephews and one niece I feel that I am very qualified to work with children. Since moving back to Memphis I have been very involved in their education and upbringing. I graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans, La., where I was a tutor for the Saturday Science Academy. In the program, I was responsible for following a strict lesson plan designed to prepare the students for the yearly LEAP Exam, which is equivalent to the Memphis City School's TCAP. I focused on students in grades fourth and fifth in mathematics and reading comprehension. Upon my time spent at Dillard University and the programs existance the scores of students involved in the program increased tremendously from previous years. I worked for the program for 1 year as a form of workstudy, therefore teaching me a sense of empowerment and responsibility. I have also worked a a certified trainer and restaurant opener for Bubba Gump Shrimpy Company. I trained new hires on all front of house procedures and conducted their orientation. I have also worked for Six Flags Theme Park in New Orleans as a stage performer entertaining in family friendly shows.
Teaching Style
I feel that I can relate to children because I am also a child at heart. I believe in constant verbal quizzing and repitition as a means to develop the child's ability to retain knowledge and call it forth at will. I have learned from past work experiences that all people learn differently be it either visual, kinetic (hands-on), or verbal (by listening). By learning the child's learning type you can tell which method appeals to them and can create a learning environment to encourage their growth at a faster rate. I also have a history in the theatrical arts and vocal music performance which can assist in grasping the child's attention during those times of relaxed focus. Lastly, I feel that positive encouragment is key to building confidence and trust in those students with lowered self esteem.
