Experience Summary
As a graduate student at the University of Southern California, I taught freshman comp (expository writing) for two years. I very much enjoyed this experience, and later as a legal assistant I presented occasional informal tutorial sessions on grammar and usage at the firms where I would work. I have always enjoyed a reputation as a "wordsmith" while working with attorneys over the past 15+ years, and I am proud that I managed to pass on my love of reading and learning to my own son (now age 21).
Teaching Style
While teaching writing at USC, I would use various media, including music and visual stimuli, to encourage students to formulate their own thoughts and opinions on various topics. These might range from philosophical themes to current events. Twice a semester, we would cancel class for a day or two so that I could meet individually with each student to assess his or her progress. The insights gained from these one-on-one sessions were invaluable to me and helped guide me as to what sorts of exercises were most valuable with a particular group of students. I have always been flexible and willing to change what isn't working in favor of a new approach or technique.
