Experience Summary
During college, I took math classes as high as Calculus III and took many interdisciplinary classes that allowed me to appreciate the interconnectedness of different subjects. I also took classes in scientific writing and wrote a scientific thesis my senior year on the subject of using chemistry instrumentation for detecting discreet amounts of gold in seawater.
Although I do not have extensive experience in teaching or tutoring, I do have a passion for teaching that is demonstrated in my pursuit of a Master's degree in Science Education At Florida International University. In the past year, I was a student teacher at Mays Middle School in Miami, FL. I have always been looking for tutoring jobs and have not been successful. But my love of helping others learn is not hampered, I instead tutor my fellow classmates and anyone who I knew was struggling in a subject that I knew well.
Teaching Style
My style is deeply rooted in Vygotsky’s theory of cognitive development. The ideas of scaffolding, cooperative learning and fostering students’ zone of proximal development should be well represented when teaching because they have been shown to work. Also Bloom’s Taxonomy of higher order questioning and comprehension is important in judging students’ understanding and should always be in the back of the mind when teaching.
Students display a spectrum of idiosyncrasies and characteristics, and one-size-fits-all model of education is not only inappropriate but also counterproductive in that it does not do justice to culturally and linguistically diverse students. Therefore lesson that are rich in Brown’s principles of learning, teaching and cultural awareness and diverse activities from visual and audio to labs and traditional paper and pencil assignment will be much more effective in reaching the broad learning styles of each student especially those who use English as a second language.
