About Me

Experience Summary

Since beginning my studies in the creative writing program at Purchase College in 2004, writing and literature have become the number one passion and focus of my life. I have been fortunate to study with distinguished lecturers, professors and publishing poets from universities like Columbia and Harvard in the the small program at Purchase, like William Wadsworth, Cecily Parks, and Monica Ferrell. Last month I was recognized for my dedication to poetry and the creative writing program by the faculty when I was awarded the Friends of Humanities American Society of Poetry Senior Prize. I think this is partly due to how I have continued to challenge and encourage my peers to excel and develop at love of literature and writing like I have. I aspire to earn an MFA and eventually teach English and Creative Writing at the university level. I feel that being a English and Writing tutor would be a great step on my way to pursing my life goal, and I know I could motivate and connect with students who are having trouble understanding and appreciating literature. Please consider me as a worthy, energetic candidate for this position.

Teaching Style

After experiencing all types of teachers and professors over the course of my education, I've learned that a teacher can only leave a lasting and significant impression on a student by getting that student excited about the subject being spoken. I have learned from my best teachers that patience and being aware of how each individual student understands the subject matter are virtues. I have also learned that it is not helpful for a teacher to give answers or interpretations of the subject matter, but rather to guide a student through the subject matter, to teach them how to fully comprehend the subject matter for themselves. I think this is extremely important to good English skills and is the key to uncovering a passion for literature and creativity in a student.
