Experience Summary
While pursuing my Master of Arts at Ohio University, I worked as a long-term substitute teacher as a Title 1 Reading Specialist. I enjoyed this work immensely and focused on grades 1-5. In these tri-weekly sessions, we practiced our reading skills and built our vocabulary.
During the 2008-2009 school year, I tutored 4th & 5th graders in reading at IPS #78. This tutoring program was offered through the United Way of Central Indiana's ReadUp program, which encourages reading skills. In grades 1-3 we learn to read. Beginning in grade 4, we read to learn.
My professional background in not-for-profit fundraising has allowed me to use my excellent communication skills - both speaking and writing - on a daily basis. I value education and spend most of my leisure time reading novels. I would like to continue to educate local youth to improve their reading skills and encourage of lifelong love of reading and literature.
Teaching Style
I have professional and volunteer experience tutoring children in reading and have learned that a reward system encourages young readers to strive for their best. When our meetings begin, I will assess your student, discover their interests, learn their learning style, and offer a graduated learning system based on clear goals and rewards. I will also work with your family to encourage a reading program at home, outside of tutoring sessions.
