Experience Summary
As a former classroom teacher and district literacy coordinator and instructional coach, I feel that I have a wealth of experience helping children of all socioeconomic, language, and academic levels. After relocating, I branched out into different educational avenues, such as developing elementary math curriculum for a software company and contract work for various academic-support companies. Currently, I independently contract with two education-based companies, as well as tutor students in an academic center. I have tutored English Language Learners in Integrated Language Arts, Writing, and Mathematics. Currently, I tutor Phonics, Reading and Language Arts, and Mathematics (2nd to 8th grade).
Teaching Style
I am always on the lookout for the twinkle in a student's eyes when he has finally understood an especially challenging skill or concept. This is what keeps me working with children, although I no longer teach full-time. I believe that the small successes help a student progress quicker and with more confidence and self-esteem. Positive reinforcement is key, as well a sense of comfort with what is being learned. I am easy-going, love to laugh with a student, and listen to him when he shares what is making the learning difficult. Together, we can work towards a balance and understanding of the "why's" and "how's" of learning. After my years in teaching, I have also learned that patience is needed when working with children who find any kind of learning difficult. Their confidence level needs to be nurtured and I feel I am rather successful at doing that. Looking back at my experiences, I can say with certainty that my students enjoyed learning and it was always a partnership.
