Experience Summary
I have enjoyed teaching and tutoring a wide range of students in a vast array of different settings. Most recently, I have tutored reading to 4th graders at an elementary school, taught ESL and GED subjects to adults through an adult education center, and taught creative writing to 5th-8th graders at a summer camp. I have also tutored Japanese-speaking businessmen in English as well as American culture, and tutored a family from Hong-Kong in English communication, writing, and college preparation. I am also a former professional clown and have over 13 years experience working closely with children. Indeed, I also have my own thriving 9 and 12 year old children who lovingly call me "English Teacher" when they want help with their Language Arts and Social Studies homework.
Teaching Style
My "teaching style" changes depending on the needs of my students. In all cases, an initial assessment of both the academic level and the temperament of each student are necessary before I establish a particular style. Some students are comfortable with a quieter, more formal tutor, while others are successful with a more casual, animated tutor.
In every situation, I look for opportunities to give positive reinforcement. For example, I usually warm-up with material the student feels relatively confident about, then add new or more challenging concepts, and end with the student feeling successful practicing on his or her own.
