Experience Summary
After receiving my M.A. in science education, I taught one year in a public high school. Since that time, I gained most of my teaching experience in the non-formal setting as Naturalist for a local nature center and Education Specialist for a conservation agency. I have been a classroom presenter for many age groups, spanning from primary school to college level. I am currently registered as substitute teacher, while also working as a freelance writer.
Some of my other experiences include:
· Science Editor for a textbook company
· Official for Science Olympiad and Envirothon
· Tutor at local community college
Teaching Style
My job is not simply to impart information but to help students develop confidence in a learning style that is unique to that individual. I initially encourage students to describe their level of current understanding of the subject, then ask questions that connect subject matter ideas; every learner has some level of existing knowledge, however rudimentary. Therefore it is my job to be first and foremost an avid observer and listener. This method builds the foundation on what the student already knows, but may not recognize.
Perhaps the most valuable characteristic of my style is my enthusiasm not only for a scientific understanding of nature, but also for the enjoyment of learning. A valuable approach to not knowing something is to learn how to ask good questions. When we begin to appreciate learning not as a goal but a journey, then it becomes more enjoyable and greater motivation is the result.
