Experience Summary
I have a BA in Anthropology which means that I have experience working with diverse groups of people and have a certain understanding and appreciation of the differences among individuals. I have many years of experience tutoring adults and K-12 students. Some of my students have included those with mental disorders and physical handicaps. I have been a volunteer literacy tutor with the Kern Adult Literacy Council for 4 years, many of my students being parolees enrolled in education programs. I currently work as an SES tutor and my skills include tutoring K-12 English, reading, writing, and language arts and K-8 math. I also work with students on helping to improve organizational and study skills. I feel that with passion and a little patience, the learning process can be positive for both the student and the tutor.
Teaching Style
Because of my work with persons who have physical and mental problems, I have learned to be patient and sharpen my listening skills. This way I am also able to recognize when someone is frustrated or exhausted and use these signs to better cope with any behavioral problems that may arise. I always utilize positive language and seek to understand an issue a student may have to help promote a comfortable learning environment. I find that many students respond well to a good listener and someone that takes time to give them individualized attention.
