Experience Summary
As an engineering student, I scored A's in 4 Quarters of Calculus, 3 Quarters of Engineering Physics and 1 Quarter each of: Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Static and Dynamics. Throughout college, I often tutored other classmates in math, physics, and statics and dynamics to which they and other upper-classmen would marvel. "wow, you really understand this don't you?". My 64-year old Physics professor pulled me aside one day and said I should major in Physics because in his 40+ years of teaching in Germany and the US he had never seen anyone who understood it as I do.
I have composed and taught numerous classes as a professional on topics of time management, organization and management, process engineering, and programming. I taught one semester of basic computer skills at the University of Kansas and often tutored, or assisted, our 5 daughters in their High School and College math subjects.
I have relied, all my life, on my basic math and physics skills to solve everyday household, mechanical, investment, and business challenges. I have also consulted with several businesses to help improve productivity, financing and revenue generation, and I consider this to be the ultimate test of any tutor or teacher of fundamental concepts.
Teaching Style
First, and foremost, I believe that effective learning is both fun and relevant. I have always been able to make a game of it and to make it both interesting and challenging to others. My goal is never to teach them a rote solution, but to challenge them to think about the concepts and have then tell me the answers. This builds their confidence and solidifies their learning experience. I find that if they understand how a concept was derived in the first place, they seldom forget that story and therefore have learned something that will stay with them for a live time.
I prefer to use the Socratic Method and draw the information from my students. Again, I think it is best if they THINK rather than learn. Over time I see all my students (and all our five daughters) have responded well to this approach.
