Experience Summary
As an English professor at public state universities for over 20 years, I focused on teaching students to become better readers and writers. By becoming more self-aware and responsible as readers and writers, my students develop greater confidence, and better reading and writing skills, thus helping to prepare themselves for successful careers in business, medicine, law, publishing, communications, and education. Not only have I worked as a tutor in Basic Skills Writing Lab in a university setting teaching grammar and composition to under-prepared freshmen, but I have also taught critical writing and literature, creative writing, business writing, and various literature courses from the freshman to graduate student levels. Having taught at eight colleges and universities in five states, I adapt well to various teaching environments. I excel at one-on-one conference teaching (tutoring), though I am also effective teaching in small group and full classroom settings as well.
Teaching Style
I love teaching and working with learners of all ages. I believe everyone learns at their own speed and that learners should be empowered to ask the questions they want answered. By doing so, they help set the agenda and pace of their learning, which ensures their motivation and full engagement in their educational process. My learner-centered approach has been developed during 20 plus years as an English professor and fifteen years as a father. My style incorporates the Socratic dialogue method to engage your student in dialogue that accepts and validates their questions and concerns. I have been told that my teaching style is inclusive, not overbearing, patient, and low-key. My students gain self-confidence in their new skills and abilities and have gone on to become lawyers, doctors, writers, editors, and teachers of English. I have helped thousands of learners advance in their studies and I can help the student(s) in your life too.
