Experience Summary
During my time at Southwest Virginia Community College I completed my Associates degree in General Studies, with a specialization in Education. I visited local elementary schools, assisted in classrooms, and worked with faculty of all levels. My time at Virginia Commonwealth University was even more rewarding, and helped solidify my interest in the English language as well as positive community service. While attending VCU, I was able to perfect my reading, writing and communication skills via dozens of written and oral projects, covering a broad range of subjects. After graduating, (Honor Roll) I wanted to start teaching right away. I joined VCU Americorps, where I was able to realize my natural talent in the classroom. I am anxious to continue my journey in the world of Education.
Teaching Style
I recently completed my first service year with VCU AmeriCorps, tutoring 1st and 2nd grade students at a Title 1 elementary school in an inner city setting. Many of the children had chronic behavior problems, both in the classroom and during our tutoring sessions (2 - 5 students at a time). I went into the program with no teaching/tutoring experience whatsoever--however, I quickly found that I had a special gift for working with children of all skill levels, specifically in reading/writing/spelling (areas in which we were specifically trained). I received very high marks on my evaluations, as well as enthusiastic praise from my supervisors and teachers. My teaching style is simple enough: understand how a particular child learns (visual cues, repeated verbal instruction, etc.) and then be consistent. With consistence, patience, genuine caring, and a sense of humor, I believe any child can be given the precious gift of literacy.
