Experience Summary
I have a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with a minor in ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching. Throughout my educational experience, I had many opportunities for tutoring students one-on-one in a variety of subjects. I’ve tutored a broad spectrum of students, from those who were struggling and falling behind, to some who were excelling and who simply needed help being motivated. I once had an Israeli student who knew almost no English when the school year began, and I tutored her every day in oral language and reading instruction. In a matter of a few months, she showed tremendous improvement. In my five years of teaching elementary school, not only have I taught reading, writing, math, social studies, science, and art in a whole classroom setting, I have also tutored many children individually, mostly in reading, writing, and mathematics.
Teaching Style
Every child is different, and each has his/her own unique style of learning. My goal in teaching is always to find out how each child learns best and to cater my teaching to the specific needs of that child. I also believe that children need to feel successful in order to continue learning. In my teaching, I provide a safe and encouraging atmosphere where a child feels capable and confident enough to take some risks when learning something new. Learning should be enjoyable and challenging, but not frustrating. I am sensitive to the feelings of my students and know when to switch gears when a particular method is not proving to be effective. I have a kind and patient demeanor, and I value each student as a special person with many talents and abilities.
