Experience Summary
I have a bachelor's degree in Specaial and Elementary education and have completed 45+ continuing credit hours. Many of the credit hours that I have accumulated have been in refining my teaching skills in mathematics, reading, and writing. I have 11 years of teaching experience in public schools. My experience has been mostly with primary-aged children, though I have taught children through sixth grade. I enjoy working one-on-one with children and have done so in my classroom and through before and after school tutoring sessions. I have several years of experience teaching reading and writing in summer school sessions for students going into second and third grades.
Teaching Style
Children are intrinsically curious and interested learners. My role as an educator is to provide a safe environment for risk-taking that engages learners. Developing a relationship with the children is always part of the learning process. Through my teaching experiences and continuing education, I have learned the importance of constructivist learning as well as other approaches that help students when they are struggling with a particular concept. I believe that it’s important to provide children with an appropriate level of challenge as they are learning. To do so, they need experiences that are guided, then shared, and finally that are independent. Assessment is an important part of the teaching and learning process. I use assessments that inform my next moves as a teacher, and make sure that the assessment and teaching materials I am using directly apply to the skills and concepts that children need.
