Experience Summary
After receiving a BA in English and working as a writer/editor/proofreader, I wanted to more full use my linguistics training. I received certification in tutoring ESL and also students studying for their GED. I subsequently did both. The experience enabled me to teach ESL in various environments and more formally. My background in publishing and printing has honed my writing and grammatical skills, which are both well above par. I believe I am quite effective teaching adults and have studied the demographics, etc., in order to understand their motivations.
Teaching Style
I believe that one of the keys to my success in teaching has been the effort I have put forth in studying and understanding the backgrounds and motivation of my adult students. For example, students who are learning to get a job learn differently than students who want to be able to communicate in English with their children and understanding the difference allows me to teach them in such ways that hold and keep their interest. Nothing can replace the eagerness of a student.
