Experience Summary
When I graduated from Florida International University just two months ago, I found myself faced with three simple realities. One, that most of my experience was in the field of education, having worked not only with special education students of elementary/high school ages, but also regular education students in grades ranging from second to seventh. Two, that I would have to make a crucially important decision regarding my future in making my first major career decision as a university graduate; and three, that making a positive difference in the lives of children, especially on a one-to-one basis, was going to be one of the biggest contributions I would pride myself in accomplishing for years to come. I have worked with children most of my life, in places ranging from classrooms to playrooms to family rooms, and in subjects ranging from mathematics to the sciences, social studies to English; and I am thrilled at the prospect of continuing to do so.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is one that emphasizes energy, persistence and most importantly, self esteem. My career as a tutor has been marked by focusing on students' strengths, rather than their weaknesses, and insisting on their ability to achieve more than they previously thought they ever could. I believe that we are all teachers in some way or another, constantly teaching through our words, actions and sometimes even nonverbal messages. If a child does not have an environment at home that is conducive to learning, the encouragement of a single teacher at a classroom or library can change that child's entire attitude toward learning, and consequently, his/her whole life. I love to spend time with children, and motivate them to do and be better. Because I take a holistic approach to teaching, I know I am able to empower them by always reminding them of the big picture: that knowledge is power, and that the small seeds that they are learning today will be the foundation of what they are able to achieve tomorrow.
