Experience Summary
I have over 20 years experience teaching mathematics at the community college and university levels. I have also worked as a tutor at the Mathematics Laboratory and the Academic Success Center for Okaloosa-Walton Community College. I have worked as a private tutor on numerous occasions in the past. Most recently, I worked as a tutor for a private school in the Dominican Republic where I tutored eleventh graders in pre-Calculus.
Teaching Style
From my own experiences as a student I have come to the opinion that the most valuable educational accomplishment one can achieve is to “learn how to learn”. This seems to be a state of mind, an epiphany if you will, which hopefully will be realized at some point in the course of an individual’s intellectual development. Such a state of mind is not usually due to the efforts of a particular instructor, nor is it the result of having taken a certain class. Rather it represents an ideal culmination of the educational process. Maybe, some would say it is the moment when the Scholar is born. Perhaps it is the moment when the true Student emerges. As instructors we may never know if we have ever contributed to such a moment of realization in a person’s life, but it is nice to think we can and it is nice to try, and over all that’s my philosophy of teaching. On a more specific level I have found that patience, presentation of material in a clear precise format, and a safe learning environment to be key ingredients for successful instruction.
