Experience Summary
I graduated from an excellent, research-oriented liberal arts college with two Bachelor degrees. While in school, I wrote many research reports and essays, two senior theses and co-wrote a report with my mentor, which I presented at the 2003 Annual Eastern Psychology Association Conference. I have also completely designed, carried out, and reported my own research experiment as my senior experience in psychology. Throughout my studies, professors have commented on my writing abilities, and the college's writing center offered me a student teaching job to tutor English. With my work as a mental health technician in a group home, I have tutored SED youth in reading, math and science. I also have a lot of informal tutoring experience with friends in college and with my little sister, who is currently finishing fifth grade.
Teaching Style
I understand there are various levels of achievement ability in students, so I am patient and always give positive reinforcement for all achievements, no matter how small. I try to get to know my student's likes and dislikes and use these things in examples when possible to make learning new and challenging. I use what I call the "training wheel" approach. I will work through problems and practice applications of methods along with a student several times. Then I give the student ample opportunity to complete tasks independently to develop confidence in themselves.
