Experience Summary
After receiving degrees from Florida universities, I spent 11 years on the faculty of the University of Kentucky. My work there mainly involved research in the epidemiology of plant diseases, including considerable mathematical modeling and statistical analysis. My teaching duties included supervision of a department seminar, and teaching a course in epidemiology. In 1991 I retired from my tenured position. For most of the time since then I have been self-employed in part-time businesses. For the last two years I have worked for the Hillsborough County School District: as a substitute teacher during 2006-2007, and a temporary full time high school math teacher during 2007-2008. Although I have not been specifically employed as a tutor, I have had considerable experience working with both college and high school students in one-on-one situations.
Teaching Style
Learning mathematical concepts involves both understanding and memorization. To aid students in this process, I try to help them see the information from various perspectives. Different students have different learning styles, and problems in classes can often result more from a mismatch of style than lack of ability. A key task of a good tutor is to discover the best ways of presenting the subject matter to each particular student. I try to approach teaching and tutoring with patience, good humor and optimism.
