Experience Summary
My first teaching experience was in 1984 in Southern Spain, where I taught adult classes and tutored children in English. During the past twenty years I have been active in providing training presentations and workshops to colleagues and community groups. From 1993 to 1996 I taught ESL part-time to Cuban adults, and from 1996 to 1999 I was an adjunct instructor in the Social Work Department of Florida International University. Last spring I taught a semester of undergraduate Sociology at National School of Technology, and I am currently employed part-time as an instructor in Personal Finances.
Teaching Style
Having myself been exposed to fifteen years of others' teaching styles, I decided years ago that I would teach the way I would wish to be taught. Whether teaching adults or youth, I endeavor to interest and engage students as much as possible using films, guest speakers, games and class projects. Though I myself am a visual learner, I am careful to ensure that audial and tactile learners' needs are addressed as well. I've learned that when you treat students with respect and consideration, they will almost invariably respond in kind. When working with children and adolescents, I've found that the three basic principles of "Love and Logic" are invaluable: 1) Use enforceable limits; 2)Provide choices within limits; and 3) Apply consequences with empathy.
