Experience Summary
As an undergraduate engineering student and tutor for engineering and other courses, I developed a strong background in the techniques and skills necessary in many levels of math, science, and technical writing. Additionally, the rigorous demands of engineering school have taught me the persistence, organizational ability, and other academic skills required of any tutor or student.
My graduate study in special education, volunteer work, and experience as the brother of a child with special needs has given me a great deal of experience working with students with disabilities and knowledge of issues which they face in academic settings. During the school year, I work as a learning specialist for college students with learning disabilities. This has helped me to understand more about differences among students' learning styles and improved my ability to be an effective tutor for students with a wide range of needs.
Teaching Style
I am a highly dedicated tutor who enjoys working directly with students and seeing them succeed. I am a firm believer that many students benefit from an individualized tutor because he or she provides an active and collaborative learning relationship. For many students, this type of relationship and level of interaction makes the learning experience much more meaningful.
I strive to help students learn by keeping them engaged in our sessions and challenging them to think critically about the subject matter, rather than by simply providing answers. I believe self-determination is an important skill for any student, and encourage them to lead tutoring sessions while voicing their ideas, concerns and levels of understanding as needed. When necessary, I try to help students learn more about their own learning style, and emphasize strategies for reading, studying, problem solving, and organization which are in line with their personal preferences and needs.
