Experience Summary
My commitment to tutoring and teaching has been evident since high school when I organized and participated in the National Honor Society’s tutoring program at a local middle school. From that point on, I have pursued opportunities to work with children and share my enthusiasm for learning and discovery. During my time at Davidson College, I participated in a weekly tutoring program in Charlotte, North Carolina, in which I worked with an at-risk student one-on-one on Math, Science, Reading, Social Studies, and Writing assignments. I continued in that direction and spent a summer working as a teacher for a program designed to help develop academic and social skills of children living in one of Charlotte’s economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. After graduation, I was able to share my love for the intricacies of the English language in Taipei, Taiwan, where I both worked as a classroom teacher at an English language school and gave private instruction.
Teaching Style
My enthusiasm for teaching stems from my personal excitement about learning. I believe that the knowledge we absorb shapes us as human beings and expands our ability to interact with the world. As a result, I am passionate about helping others expand their capacity to know, learn, and inquire. I believe that taking teaching to the next level requires students to ask questions, rather than be force-fed answers. It is necessary, therefore, for me to understand what motivates and interests individual students so that I can engage a student’s natural curiosity. I believe that kindness and humor much exist in balance with structure and a sense of discipline for teaching to be most effective.
