Experience Summary
I earned a BA in math and chemistry secondary education from Olivet College, a liberal arts college in Olivet, MI. There I earned enough credits to fill the requirements for a math major and four minors including organic, physical, and analytical chemistry and communications. While a student, I worked as a tutor for the athletic department helping athletes with math and sciences. After graduating I was a substitute teacher working for five weeks long term in a math class before finding my first teaching position in Detroit. The school was an adult education school that teaches life skills run by a company called Detroit Association of Black Organizations. They hired me to also teach their summer GED program where I taught testing skills, life skills, math and English. I now teach algebra I, algebra II, geometry, pre-calculus, and academic studies at Riverside Academy West (located in Dearborn).
Teaching Style
To learn math is to do math. In order to do math or chemistry one must know how to read the subject material. I specifically teach students to read the text allowing them the tools to be able to teach themselves. After the student reads each section (before our session) and takes notes he/she and I will then cover all of the material together and I will address any questions the student might have. I teach with real world applications, modeling, and modified teaching based on the needs of each student. Because I enjoy the lifestyle of a teacher so much I have even taken up coaching football, wrestling, and basketball to teach leadership and sportsmanship.
