Experience Summary
Having completed my graduate studies in Special Education with an Option in Transition Studies, I feel that California State University, Los Angeles has done a superior job at preparing me for teaching and realizing each person's individual skills, needs and learning styles. My skills in teaching and tutoring were evidenced during my undergraduate studies in Linguistics at University of California, Santa Barbara where my English professor picked me out of a large group of writers and recommended me to be a writing tutor for the university. There, as a sophomore writing tutor for my peers and those years ahead of me (juniors and seniors) I realized my intense dedication and ease at coaching others in writing technique. With a minor in French and a strong background in speaking Spanish, I have become a well rounded writer with diverse perspectives on attracting different readers.
Teaching Style
When I teach children, my first goal and focus is to discover what their individual learning style is. My background in Special Education has shown me that being an effective teacher has more to do with teaching in an effective way for the particular learners. For instance, involving music in my math or social studies teaching for kids that are musically inclined is a great way to truly reach kids with creative learning styles. I love having children participate in hands on activities while incorporating real, everyday reading materials such as newspapers, magazines, recipes, internet etc. so they can see the importance of reading in life. I am committed to the belief that every learner is able to be successful at their own rate and with their own style being embraced.
