Experience Summary
I am just getting ready to graduate from the University of Utah with a degree in Mathematics and an minor in Physics. I have extensive knowledge of Mathematics and good knowledge of science in general, as I have taken many chemistry, biology and physics classes while at the University. I have fair grammatical skills, as I have had the opportunity to work in an undergraduate research program, which required me to write research papers. I also have experience tutoring high school and junior high school students. I worked as a tutor in the Avid program for Granite School District last year. I have also tutored students privately in Mathematics.
Teaching Style
I am a believer in the socratic method. As an Avid tutor we were taught to employ this method to help students understand concepts. I think that it is better to ask questions, and guide students' thinking rather than just giving them the answer, or telling them how to do a problem. Simply telling someone how to do something or giving them the answer prevents that person from figuring it out for his or herself. If the student can figure it out for themselves they will achieve a much better level of understanding.
