Experience Summary
Throughout my life I have been tutoring and teaching my peers. In elementary through high school, teachers would ask me to take time to explain one-on-one the coursework with my classmates. In college I naturally became the go-to person for help with coursework. My official experience, however, did not come until I was in graduate school. There I taught laboratory sections in animal and dairy science as well as tutored my classmates after hours. There is nothing that I enjoy more than figuring out how to convey information in such a way that my pupil will begin to really understand what they are doing and even be able to explain it back to me. Although I have approximately two years of official teaching experience, it has been a lifelong endeavor for me and one that I hope to continue to pursue.
Teaching Style
My style of teaching is one that strives to bring an overall understanding of the importance and relevance of the subject at hand. I believe children, as well as all people, learn much better and have much greater retention when they understand the bigger picture involved and understand why it is important to learn the subject at hand. I believe in relating the topics to something the pupil can understand and therefore grasp. One of my greatest teachers was a chemistry professor who was able to explain a complicated chemistry concept in terms of a McDonald's Happy Meal. It was something we all could relate to and understand. Furthermore, if I can relate why learning the particular topic is important, then I believe the child will become excited and be much more apt to retain and retell the information to others. That is my ultimate goal; I want to get children of all ages excited about learning.
