Experience Summary
Throughout my high school years, I tutored middle and high school students in mathematics (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus), basic chemistry, biology, English, and writing skills. I have earned a BA in both Computer Science and Criminal Justice. During undergraduate study, I tutored high school students in math. In the last ten years, I've mentored students of all ages in a variety of subjects. Students ages twelve and above have come to me for help in math, computers, and writing. Through various church youth groups, I have helped kids learn about the internet, various school subjects, and college preparation.
Teaching Style
I like to have students attempt homework problems on their own (before our scheduled time), and keep track of those problems that were difficult or confusing. We then walk through how to do those specific problems using 2 or more different strategies. I work to find the style of each individual student. Every person is capable of learning math, some just have different ways of seeing things. Often my students will say ‘why don’t they just say it like that in the first place?’ This is when I know I’ve done it; I’ve found that one students way of understanding math. It’s amazing how many possibilities in career choices are opened up just by being able to pass College Algebra.
