Experience Summary
Through the experience of pursuing my degree at Boston University, I was exposed to many different styles of learning and teaching due to my interdisciplinary concentration in Latin American Studies. After spending two months in Peru on a study abroad program, I utilized my Spanish language minor by volunteering as an ESL teacher of adults at the Brazilian Workers Center in East Boston, MA. My college experience culminated in a personal research project where I was personally both class and teacher, facilitating an understanding of how I best learn. During my studies I participated in approximately one year of peer tutoring organized through the dorm I lived in, allowing me to see how others learn. The diversity of my studies provides me with the ability to tutor in many liberal arts subjects including History, Government, and English at the higher levels, though I also scored high in math and science on standardized tests.
Teaching Style
After working with adults and my peers in Boston, I've come to appreciate how rewarding teaching is. I believe that not all students learn the same way and thus aim to be as flexible as possible with each new pupil in order for them to get the most out of our time together. This may include physical expressions of a concept, pictures, or well-organized notes gone over orally. People learn well through positive reinforcement and helping children feel good about themselves while learning will not only provide a strong foundation for self-esteem, but also promote a positive connection with knowledge for years to come. I hope to help shape the future generations to be as aware about the world as they can.
