Experience Summary
As a microbiology student, I have taken rigorous courses in the sciences as well as math. The laboratory classes that accompany the science classes also provided first hand knowledge and the ability to write research papers and lab reports. This along with my passion for chemistry let me to take a position at the University of Florida Teaching Center. I first started teaching as a math tutor but then I was moved to a chemistry position. I have also held a tutor position when I was a peer mentor to students in an introductory chemistry class. Also, my work through Big Brothers/Big Sisters has allowed me to focus on my tutoring skills.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is very specific to each student I tutor. I try to tailor my thoughts so that any student at any level in the subject can understand me. At the teaching center, the focus was to help guide the student to get the correct answer and not just give the answer. Sometimes the thinking process to achieving the correct answer is more important than the answer itself. I also try using diagrams and figures when they are called for to explain some of the topics. I frequently use positive reinforcement so the student feels even more encouraged to learn.
