Experience Summary
I have spent most of my life working with children. I began in child care, working with both school age and preschool children. After receiving my Bachelor's degree, I began teaching middle school Language Arts and tutoring at local centers part time. It was as a tutor that I gained experience teaching many different subjects to students of all ages. I tutored students in English, reading, math, study skills, and speed reading. I then went back to school to earn my Master's degree in English Literature. Since then, I have worked at local colleges and universities teaching English, reading and composition.
Teaching Style
I believe successful teaching depends heavily upon the following: the creation of a learning atmosphere that stimulates active individualized learning, the clear communication of performance expectations, and the implementing of assessments that are both varied and intriguing so as to reach all types of learners.
My experience at almost every level of the educational system has taught me that no matter what form the classroom setting takes, active learning must be met with the implementation of standards. Because students learn in a variety of ways, teachers must use multiple assessments with clear rubrics to guide students toward meeting those high standards.
Every child wants to learn, and every child can learn if given the proper tools and the proper support. I have made education a priority in my own life, and I use that to make my students see the importance of education in their lives.
