Experience Summary
I have had the opportunities to work with children and adults of all ages and abilities. In my junior year at Emerson College, a passion for, and knowledge of reading and writing created an opportunity for me to tutor high school children in literacy. I also participated in an English as a second language volunteer project allowing me to assist three brothers from Africa to learn English. I have student teaching experience on the first and third grade level for Catholic Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes as well as teacher assisting for a kindergarten class focusing on literacy. My educational background in film, combined with my internship experiences, has been excellent preparation for any tutoring position.
Teaching Style
I can imagine that a degree in film may deter you from my candidacy but I would like to bring to your attention the statistics about children and television/movies. The average American child spends
3.5 minutes per week with parents in meaningful conversation. The
average child watches 1,680 minutes of television per week. 54 percent of 4-6 year-olds who, when asked to choose between watching TV and spending time with their fathers, preferred television. The number of hours per year the average American youth spends in school is 900 hours. The number of hours per year the average American youth watches television is 1500 hours. I can relate to these kids and what they know and are into. And I can use that as a way to help them learn to love learning, especially reading and writing. Kids today don't understand plot, setting, characters, nouns, verbs, prepositions but if you relate those parts of a sentence or story to their favorite television show or movie, it helps them make connections they can't make from a blackboard. At the present time I am trying to approach a career that enables me to provide students with a “head start” in mastering basic skills. I would use my ability to be creative, nurturing and most of all, patient. It is my goal to combine my range of experience with my ability to be a compassionate, wholehearted, intelligent tutor, one who will make a positive contribution to all students.
