Experience Summary
Both my undergraduate and graduate collegiate experiences have given me ample knowledge and skills to draw from with regard to teaching and tutoring. The experience of doing it, however, gave me much more. While I was in graduate school at the University of Texas I tutored women athletes. My teaching career began immediately after I finished graduate school in Austin, Texas. I taught in Austin for a year at Virginia College and then took a teaching job at the Florida Keys Community College. I was a Speech Teacher. Teaching students how to present themselves in verbal and written presentation was rewarding because I knew that I was preparing them for the future. Tutoring and teaching are great because both student and teacher learn; it's a two-way street.
Teaching Style
I really enjoy teaching and tutoring because not only am I helping others, I am learning as well. Teaching and tutoring are about giving: giving your time, your knowledge, and the things that you know will help your students. Every student learns at his/her own pace. My teaching style is adaptive to the particular student and subject matter. I like to encourage students to learn for themselves. An example would be to explain a theory and then have the student(s) demonstrate their understanding of that theory with a concrete example, so that they are participating in the process. I like the idea of learning by participation.
