Experience Summary
In elementary school when I tutored others younger than I in the Future Educators Club, I knew my call was teaching. I really began my career in 1999, as an afterschool tutor at a local middle school. There I was able to help students in social studies, math, writing, and my passion which is reading. Working as a tutor while in college helped me to recognize strengths and weaknesses in individuals, and I apply that knowledge to my students each day. I have always felt that one-on-one instruction always reinforces and clarifies lessons the students have leanred in the classroom.
Teaching Style
I do believe all students can learn. My style of teaching incorporates the reading strategies from the C.R.I.S.S. program which materializes what the students are reading and learning through the use of creatve methods. I do not like the students to just give me a one-page summary of what they have learned, that is the old-fashioned way. I want to know they learned something, and I like to use some of the following methods: drawing scenes, creating poems to match characters, explaining, creating pattern puzzles, and communicating their ideas and interpretations in creative ways that engage them in learning.
