Experience Summary
As a teenager, I became an Eagle Scout and was a peer mentor (Big Bro./Big Sis.). I am an Earlham College graduate with a BA in Japanese Studies. After graduation I went on a study-abroad program to Japan and taught English to junior high students, and tutored elementary students in Japanese upon returning to the U.S. I was a counselor at a camp for teenage boys with behavior issues where I provided therapeutic action and wrote daily individualized reports. I have assisted in two classrooms and instructed P.E. at a Montessori school. I lead a classroom of lower elementary students (6-9 yo). I have extensive experience tutoring, teaching, and managing individual and groups of children.
Teaching Style
Each child is unique and learns in different ways. By being an active participant, children are able to 'construct' their education more impressionistically, with the understanding that auditory and visual aids accompany. As a Montessori teacher I approach the students with attention towards their overall well-being. I guide my lessons with patience and clear direction, and note progress toward specific follow-ups/goals. I devote time to updating records and documenting observations.
