Experience Summary
I have participated in two summer school programs (2nd and 4th grade) in NYC that helped prepare students to retake state tests in the areas of math and literacy. I have also been tutoring full-time in Brooklyn, NY for two children ages 8 and 10. Along with this I worked in a recreation center and helped children with their homework from first grade to eighth for two years. I have a teacher certification from birth to grade two and have a BS in Psychology. I have worked with students who are native Spanish speakers and also students with learning disabilities. In my classsroom this past year I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with a student who has language delays, emotional and behavior problems. I was able to cooperate with both his speech teacher, parents, and SIET in order to create a program that worked best for him.
Teaching Style
I have learned many different theories and ways of teaching, most of which I incorporate in my style of teaching. The ones I really believe in and use most are using a hands on approach using the ideas of inquiry and real life experiences in order to make learning the most meaningful and interesting. All children are different therefore individualized programs are needed in order for the child to succeed. I also believe that children learn both socially and indiviually and that it is important for children to learn in many different ways. To see that I have made a difference in a childs life or to hear them talk about something they learned from me, is not only exciting but makes me want to make a difference in as many children's lives as I can.
