Experience Summary
I began my teaching career with the nonprofit organization, Teach For America. With my undergraduate studies completed in Anthropology and a minor in Spanish I came to the realization that my most rewarding and interesting work had been in working with students and teachers as a tutor in the public school system. So, I decided to move to a very rural location on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. There I spent the next four years as a special education teacher. I taught students with Emotional Disorders, and resoruce level classes in English and math with students with specific learning disabilities. Eventually, I took the lead in creating an inclusion program and was asked to be the department head. At the end of my four years, I completed my Masters Degree in Special Ecuation. More recently, I have been a resource math teacher and inclusion science and English teacher in Flagstaff, AZ. I am looking forward to a change of pace and scheduling and am exploring options to becoming a tutor in the town of Flagstaff, AZ.
Teaching Style
As a special education teacher of six years I am fully aware of the multitude of learning styles that our students come to us with. As a teacher it is our responsibility to tap into their strenghts to bring about a thoughtful learning experience. In addition to recognizing strenghts, I am able to remediate areas of low acheivement, or when the case may be, circumvent the disability area so that the student can access the curriculum. I feel that my gift in working with students is my ability to remain calm and focused while delivering interesting lessons.
