Experience Summary
Besides teaching language arts for the last four years in North Carolina, I have a lifelong interest in education, as so much was provided to me. I have tutored students from Japan, India, Puerto Rico and Mexico in vocabulary acquisition and conversational English. My background in journalism provides my strong foundation in spelling, grammar and reading comprehension. I have also completed graduate coursework in linguistics in San German, Puerto Rico, as well as a semester abroad in China, focusing on International Relations. I am eager to help children succeed in school, and feel quite capable in relating to students at their level.
Teaching Style
My teaching style has foundations in the Socratic seminar, where class discussions lead students to form their own understanding of the materials/subjects at hand. As students only retain 5% of what is spoken in lectures, I encourage students to follow a model of inquiry and responsibility for their own work. I support studying and reading at home in order to excel on tests, and offer individual assistance to each student. I also insist that parents take a strong leadership role in the education of their children, so that they may develop a yearning for information and knowledge. Lastly, I use the daily newspaper as reading material as well as topics for discussion and vocabulary acquisition. My goal is to help students become critical thinkers who take responsibility for their education.
