Experience Summary
During the last semester of earning my BA in English, I was a tutor in the Reading and Writing Center at Eastern Kentucky University. When I was accepted to Florida State University to work on my Master's, I was also awarded a teaching assistantship. I have taught ENC 1102 and 1102 (freshman composition and research writing courses), and I developed and instructed an ENC 1142 Frehman Imaginative Writing course. I love one-on-one instruction and require all of my students to attend individual conferences with me. After completion of my degree and assistantship, I was kept as an adjunct in the First Year Writing Program at FSU. I currently teach two sections of 1102 there.
Teaching Style
Through my assistantship, I discovered that teaching was my passion. I believe in teaching writing through the drafting process and encourage students to be proactive about revision. I also believe that is absolutely necessary to communicate with each student individually; I always require individual conferences outside of class time. I also believe in balancing praise with criticism so that the student develops security about his or her writing, and I also believe that detailed written and oral response to a draft opens a dialogue about the writing that draws the student into the process.
