Experience Summary
I have earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Virginia, and taught at the university level at Virginia Tech, UVA, Hampden-Sydney College, West Point, and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for ten years. During that time, I have taught philosophy, logic (including test prep for the GRE and LSAT), and composition. A chemistry minor in college, I am also proficient in basic science and mathematics. I have tutored in composition, algebra, logic, chemistry, and philosophy.
Teaching Style
My job is not to give students answers, but to push them to articulate better and give better answers. I teach not by lecturing but by discussion; together we work through problems and questions. By showing students (gently) where their thinking could be improved without giving them the actual answers, I push students to solve problems on their own. My teaching strategies were recognized with teaching awards at UVA and at UNC-Pembroke.
