Experience Summary
Being in software development for 25 years was a worthwhile journey and fulfilling my objectives in that capacity freed me to direct my energies into the areas of supplemental education and academic
coaching in the spring of 2006. My recent activities have onsistently focused on preparing the next generation for success. In this regard I have been a math and reading tutor, academic coach, and created and conducted a workshop called “Math’s Past” for Teck
Trek, an AAUW sponsored summer camp for girls.
Teaching Style
The following are two of my favorite experiences with math tutoring. One high school sophomore was making a D in geometry and needed help studying for her first semester final exam. After I worked with her for only three hours she missed making a B by one percentage point and never made less than a B on any subsequent
quizzes or tests under my tutelage. Another middle school girl actually cried when she first had to work with the concept of estimating. In this case I set aside the prescribed materials, created several new estimating concepts and within fifteen minutes she was laughing and suggesting additional estimation applications with the new materials. I believe my success in these instances was because of my ability to bring life to the topic and to read the intellectual and emotional state of my students.
