Experience Summary
My first academic teaching experience started in the fifth grade, when my teacher asked me to help my classmates after school. Slowly my love of teaching and helping my classmates grew. Later I was asked to give lessons to my classmates during school hours. I started my own tutoring service for school children in my college days. During my Ph.D. program, I taught several undergraduate and graduate courses in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. I have earned my Bachelor's and master's degrees in biochemistry and my PhD is in Biochmeistry-Genetics.
I love teaching and enjoy empowering the students to get involved in the subjects they learn about.
Teaching Style
I think good class materials, sufficient examples and explanations are important for effective learning. I believe it is the responsibility of the teacher to tutor students in an interesting and engaging manner. The teaching should show the elegance and beauty of the subject as well as its applicability to solve concrete and real world problems. Teaching is not just instructing or imparting information to students, but it is meant to empower students to take responsibility for their learning.
While students must ultimately take responsibility for their own learning, a teacher can often inspire them to learn. As a teacher, I prefer to use my enthusiasm to help students get involved in the subject. Even when discussing hard scientific terms, I explain them with day to day things and analogies making it easy for the students to absorb. I am devoted to getting to know my students, like knowing their full names and having one-on-one conversations with them. This helps students gain confidence to speak out, approach me with any questions, or for help they may require. I also believe that having a good sense of humor is essential for a healthy and non-stressful classroom atmosphere. I view teaching as a part of the process of expanding one’s own knowledge of the subject, and improving one’s ability to effectively communicate that knowledge in the classroom. I strongly believe that the best way to learn and continue learning all through one’s life is through teaching.
