About my role as a teacher, I think that the main principle should be “teaching for understanding”. A teacher creates learning opportunities that engage students in thinking about important mathematical concepts. Facts and skills support such learning but are not the ultimate goal. A teacher not only draws on past knowledge of mathematics but continuously builds on and refines that knowledge during meaningful interactions with students and colleagues.
