Experience Summary
Recently I have been teaching at Nevada State College (Microbiology and Intro to Biology classes). While earning my graduate degree at Auburn University, I taught Human Anatomy and Physiology labs to undergraduate students. As a result of small class sizes, I was able to give students individual attention and encouragement. In addition, I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Spanish. Training in these disciplines has provided me with the ability to relate well with many types of personalities and with students from various cultural backgrounds.
Teaching Style
When people ask me what I want to do with my life, I say that I want to save the world, and I believe that teaching is one way that I can work toward that goal. Teaching, for me, is an opportunity to reach out to students and get them excited about science and the world in which we live. As a young girl, I stayed away from science, afraid that I wasn’t smart enough to understand it. Only after I received my BA and spent 5 years working in a field for which I had no passion did I decide to return to school to study the things I loved most in the world – animals and their environments. My first Biology instructor made the information come alive and he gave us real world examples of how the biological world works. Since then, I have strived to be that kind of teacher so that no other young person would feel like they’re not smart enough to “get” science.
