Experience Summary
As an instructor at Minnesota School of Business, I taught composition, business writing, technical writing, English grammar, and communication theory to adult students of all ages and a wide variety of backgrounds, including many ESL students. In a class of 20 students, writing ability ranged from negligible to excellent, so it was a challenge to keep all of them interested and to ensure improvement across the board. Since leaving MSB, I have tutored several ESL students in writing and grammar, mostly online. I continue to write and edit professionally.
Teaching Style
I prefer a casual learning environment, one that includes appropriate humor and an appreciation for students' individuality. My most rewarding experiences as a teacher were when students who came into the class with an "I hate writing" attitude learned to use language to express themselves -- and had fun doing it. Many students told me, "I thought I'd hate this class, but now it's my favorite."
