Experience Summary
Having graduated from the University of Michigan(GPA 3.863) and received endorsements in English and History that make me a highly qualified teacher in these areas per NCLB standards, I feel I have a lot to offer. I have had experience as an America Reads Tutor helping inner city youth achieve literacy goals. In addition, I am personally an accomplished writer having won two Hopwood writing awards for drama at the University of Michigan as well as a Marjorie Rappaport award for poetry. During the past two years, I have taught 9th and 10th grade history with an extensive emphasis on academic and archival research and the craft of writing MLA style thesis-based papers. I have also served as a MIFA forensics coach in drama and public speaking.
Teaching Style
It is my philosophy that all students want to learn and express their intellectual selves. First, a rapport is crucial. Students will work hardest for teachers who care about them. It is my pride to be known as a funny, intelligent, approachable, caring teacher and tutor while enjoying a reputation as a notorious academic hardcase. As I tell all of my students, quoting legendary baseball coach John McGraw: "The object of the game is to win." Learning builds confidence and self-reliance, which, in turn, leads to a desire to learn more. Learning is the most addictive substance known to man.
