Experience Summary
Working with central city and at-risk youth is my life work. For the past ten years I have worked in a myriad of social service and educational settings employing a plethora of strategies aimed at helping central city and at-risk students achieve academic, career and social success. What's more, as a former struggling central city and at-risk student, I understand that students can only learn when they can make meaning out of their learning experience. For that reason, my efforts are targeted at the aforementioned population group as I have an empathic understanding of how to overcome the obstacles and barriers that limit their academic success.
Teaching Style
Teaching and learning are inextricably linked. Hence, I espouse to an approach that focuses more on tapping into the students learning schema than on teaching/tutoring per se. That being said, I am very interested in establishing the motivation/purpose for learning and then developing a plan, with the student, and where appropriate the parent, that will help the student achieve his/her desired goal and/or purpose.
