Experience Summary
During my time at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, I have had the opportunity to be a part of many creative endeavors. While completing my BA in English and a writing minor, I have been involved with Student Ambassadorship, working for Cornerstone Press and working in the Mary K. Croft Tutoring-Learning Center. While I was with our team at Cornerstone Press, we released and sold an unprecedented two books in one academic semester. However, that, or any other accomplishment has not been near as rewarding as working with fellow college students in the pursuit of successful learning and continued academic improvement. To know that with the training I was given, and hope to help, students were able to gain so much more from their schooling is simply indescribable. That alone marks my time as a tutor as one of the greatest endeavors I have embarked upon.
Teaching Style
Although the core principals that I tutor with remain the same, I always prefer to get to know the individual I am helping. Without that basis and relationship to work off of, to become their friend, it is considerably more challenging to assist the learner. Beyond that, I make it my goal to do everything I can to visualize their situation and work with them to create an approach that is comfortable and effective for us both. With patience, empathy and a listening ear, I work with the learner to make the sessions both beneficial and enjoyable. It is my responsibility to help the learner discover that they are truly capable and gifted and also help that capability and those gifts to emerge. Ultimately, I am only a tool by which the learner is able to grow, because that growth would simply not be possible without them.
